About FUMIJEAN
The remarkable quality of Japanese craftsmanship is recognized worldwide. Without further discussion, this is a commonly held belief. Even global luxury brands incorporate numerous products crafted by Japanese Artisans as they expand their reach.
While the “Made in Japan” label and its inherent value are already understood, the specific details of who, when, where, and how of these products are rarely discussed. Simultaneously, many traditional craftsmen who have honed their skills for centuries struggle to find and nurture successors, putting their time-honored skills at risk of disappearing.
It is our hope that people around the world, not just Japan, will deepen their understanding towards Japanese craftsmanship and inspire a change in preserving it.
FUMIJEAN is a project aimed at highlighting the exceptional skills, passion, and craftsmanship of Japanese artisans, allowing people worldwide to rediscover their value and beauty. Believing that individual mindset changes and small actions can have significant impacts, the project’s mission is to contribute profits towards building a brighter future for Japanese artisans.
The first phase of the project focuses on Okayama Denim. Originally rooted in American workwear culture, denim produced in the Okayama prefecture of Japan is renowned for its high quality and adoption by luxury brands under the name “Okayama Denim.”
This high-quality denim, known for its unique aging and color changes with prolonged use, is considered a masterpiece of beautifully aging fabric.
FUMIJEAN’s Okayama Denim Collection incorporates craftsmanship that shines in processing and washing, aiming to be beloved by many for an extended period, regardless of trends, gender, or age.
Concerns about environmental impact in the production process, such as water usage, have also been acknowledged. A portion of the profits by FUMIJEAN’s Okayama Denim Collection will be contributed towards addressing these environmental concerns.
The second phase includes an antique collection centered around soy sauce dishes that the founder of FUMIJEAN has been collecting over many years, from throughout Japan. Among Japanese antiques, soy sauce dishes (with the proper presentation,) have the potential to be used as decorative interior art as opposed to using them as tableware.
The collection also plans to feature antiques repaired with KINTSUGI, a technique that involves using pure gold to repair cracks and fractures in pottery and ceramics. This technique breathes new life into broken items and leaves a legacy for future generations – reflecting the sustainable spirit deeply rooted in Japanese culture.
Through this project, FUMIJEAN aims to promote the work of young ceramic artists onto a global stage. Utilizing various approaches to convey excellence in Japanese traditional techniques, we aim to bridge the gap between different generations and people from different borders and encourage action towards a brighter future.

Founder's Message
It’s fantastic that even after living abroad for a long
time, I am still able to recognize the incredible and irreplaceable value of
Japan’s traditional crafts, antiques, and artistry. While there are many
collectors and enthusiasts of Japanese traditional crafts, it’s apparent that
these treasures are not easily accessible from abroad, and in turn not many
individuals are exposed to and aware of their value.
The realization that many craftsmen struggle to find
successors, risking the extinction of their remarkable skills, is quite
alarming.
FUMIJEAN is a project designed to share the fantastic skills
of Japanese artisans and their culture with people around the world,
transcending generations. Starting with projects that focus on different
techniques like Okayama Denim and antiques (both under the umbrella of Japanese
craftsmanship,) FUMIJEAN carries a message of the greatness of these techniques
and blends tradition with innovation.
Through FUMIJEAN, my hope is that many hearts are touched
with the opportunity of rediscovering the beauty of Japan’s traditional culture
and craftsmanship.
Best regards,
Fumi Lee
